Audi Tt How to Check if Headlight Xenon or Not

[Instructions/Screenshots current every bit of 1/22/2014 - All are discipline to change]

Some background

My car is lowered a lot. Not air-ride low, but depression for static suspension. Every bit such, being that I accept Adaptive Bi-Xenons from the factory, the had aimed themselves low and didn't illuminate well-nigh equally much of the road as I need, especially in the rural areas I live. This annoyed me very much so I set to it to get them fixed. Start fourth dimension I attempted to do this via other guides here and across the web, I messed upwardly because the information is outdated or for something a piffling unlike than what I needed it for. This is why I am making this guide. I feel its far more complete and direct on what I was trying to accomplish than anything else I had found.

ONLY when you accept large amounts of adjustment necessary, your adjustment isn't set (and thus throwing a code) or you merely replaced a ballast exercise you need to utilise VAG-COM to set the home position. In all other cases, you can just use your super-expensive AoA-approved phillps-head screwdriver to accommodate them.

Since in that location are substantially ii ways to go about this, I'll intermission this down into two guides: ane for pocket-size adjustment of the headlights, another for resetting the leveling and setting adaptation and so the projectors are dorsum to their factory positioning and ready for minor adjusting.

[Function 1] The Piece of cake Style to Arrange Your Headlights

  • Tools Needed:
    • Phillips Head screwdriver
  • Fourth dimension: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty (1-x): .v? Easier than putting windshield washer fluid in a car.
  • Misc Needs: ~20ft of flat ground in front of a flat wall; EASIER WHEN Nighttime.

Step 1: Park the Car.

Pretty much as stated park the motorcar on apartment ground 20' from a wall perpendicular to your motorcar. Yous want to face as squarely every bit y'all can for the nigh accurate aiming possible.

Step 2: Pop the Hood.

The late Paul Walker would be proud. Pop the hood? Pop the hood. Unfortunately you don't have a 2JZ hiding in there, but you have some ill adaptive Bi-Xenons. An 11-2nd supra doesn't accept that on you!

Step 3: Plough Your Headlights On.

Tin can't encounter where you're aiming the headlights if they're not on! Auto doesn't need to be running. However, if y'all dont trust your battery, become her runnin.

Step 4: Arrange.

Meet the prototype below for reference. The adjusters are located in the spots indicated by the red circles and the yellowish boxes. When yous expect at them, they may have a black thing in the middle of them this is simply a grit cover that can be popped off with ease.

  • Xanthous Boxes : These indicate the LATERAL adjusters. These should only exist changed if you can run across your headlights are pointed mode off centre. Information technologys worth noting that if they are, you may want to look into the difficult(er) guide below this one on how to reset the projectors to Factory spec every bit this may resolve the issues, so fine tune from there.
  • Red Circles : These betoken the VERTICAL adjusters. Theyre the ones were subsequently. Theyll alter the vertical positioning of that headlight, and dont crave many turns to move drastically!

Now that y'allve found them, get to adjusting!

Comprehend up one of the headlights and so you tin can clearly meet the uncovered headlights axle(makes things easier this mode). Insert the screwdriver and begin turning SLOWLY. I cannot stress this point enough it doesnt take many turns, and then be slow! One time done, swap sides.

**NOTE** Clockwise = Up; Counterclockwise = Downward

SPEC INFO:
Most manufacturers recommend a ane.five downward angle for headlights. Thus at 20 feet, your headlights should be aimed about .5" lower than your headlights. Yous can either guesstimate that or get a tape measure (I prefer the latter, just I'one thousand weird like that) and and so marker your aim with a piece of tape on the wall. With Bi-Xenons, or actually whatever projectors, there is a pace in the beam (looks like ____/------- ); always aim the lower part of the axle first every bit this is what volition blind oncoming cars first. The upper portion will take care of itself, illuminating more of the roadway on your side of the road.

See the image below for a reference on where you should be looking when aiming your headlights.

Footstep 5: Put everything abroad. Savour a Beer

Bold y'all've at present successfully adjusted your headlight to your liking and then a) you can see, and more importantly, b) you're not blinding traffic, you can put everything away and bask a beer knowing y'all're done.

Congrats!

[PART 2] The Hard(er) Way to Accommodate Your Headlights

  • Tools Needed:
    • Phillips Head Screwdriver
    • Laptop/Tablet/PC with VCDS
    • VAG-COM diagnostic cable
  • Time: About 15 minutes
  • Difficulty (ane-10): 4; Could go confusing (merely thats what this guide is for!)
  • Misc Needs: Aforementioned equally above; ~20ft of apartment footing facing a apartment wall

** NOTE ** If your automobile is low, and were talking anything less than ane finger gap on flat gound, it is HIGHLY, no, STRONGLY recommended that y'all go all iv wheels up off the footing. Every bit in that location are sensors in both the commuter front and rear break linkages, you lot dont desire to perform these steps and have things go confused because the sensors were reading your bodily ride peak. With the wheels in the air, it fools the sensors to thinking youre at stock ride height, allowing for proper recalibration.

Of course, if youre on air ride suspension, y'all dont have to worry about any of this.

Important: Run into steps two-iii from Part one of this guide.

If y'allre able to also perform step 1, awesome. However, if you take the car in the air information technology volition likely pose a problem and thus is not necessary. Your state of affairs and circumstances dictate what yousre able to practise.

Step 4: Connect VAG-COM and go into the Xenon Range controller

Seems like an important footstep, no? Once you have the cable connected and VCDS opened, yousll see the screen below. Click the [SELECT] button in the Select Control Module section.

Now in the next screen, click [55-Xenon Range]

You lotll now be prompted with the following screen. Sections of it are noted with numbers as they will be referenced below.

IF YOU Accept A DIPPED HEADLIGHT Fault ON YOUR DASH SCREEN
This is either because you have a faulty ballast (different issue entirely, simply will require these steps after replacement), or your adaptation/adjustment as not been set.

Referencing annotated area #ane in the screen to a higher place, yous will probable encounter the following mistake. This ways you need to continue onward and reset your adaptation/bones settings!

Step 5: Reset to Mill Adaptation

To start, click on the [Adaptation 10] button in the Advanced Functions section (see annotated area #2 in the Xenon Range screen as shown in footstep four). Yous will now encounter this screen:

Annotation: on my B7, channel 00 was not labeled in the drop-down. I but found it afterward reading through a dissimilar guide [LINK] and seeing that in one case read it inverse the fields above it to the the below screen. Your car may be different!

To reset, type in 00 into the Channel Number box, and click [READ]. This loads the manufacturing plant defaults:

Click [Save] to apply the reset. A popup box volition ask you if y'all're sure. YES YOU ARE.

Note for above epitome:
1: This is just a visual showing you what VCDS is doing. For other functions, it will likely take more info, merely since were resetting to factory defaults, the Stored Value is irrelevant. The New Value will exist replacing it
two: Clicking [Yes] will apply this new value, and thus reset all Xenon Range settings to their manufacturing plant defaults. You lot WANT THIS.

You have at present reset your headlight coding and accommodation to their mill defaults.

Stride half dozen: Setting Adjustment via Basic Settings

We now need to get into the Basic Settings to essentially let the calculator "learn" where its new domicile position is. Click on [Basic Settings 04] (encounter annotated expanse #3 in the Xenon Range screen as shown in footstep 4). Y'all will now see this screen:

Note: When I took this screenshot, the [Get!] button was not enabled, but it should be when you do information technology! If not, merely switch channels, going back to channel 01.

When yous are set, click [Go!]. This will brainstorm the Basic Settings process.

The output of the boxes to the right will modify every bit follows. When you see what is shown below, wait 20 seconds before continuing.

Now nosotrosre ready to move on. Click [On/Off/Adjacent] to continue to the learning land. Those output boxes mentioned previously will change once more. Y'all will now come across them saying "Adapt" and/or LEARNING (or something of that effect). Unfortunately I missed the screenshot on this one, but youll have to trust me itll do this! Just reference Step four from Role ane for how to manually adjust.

At this point, this is when you lot fine melody your adjustments. Go to your headlights and adjust as you need to. VCDS will wait.

**NOTE**: If youre in a position like me where y'all had not set up adjustment, even though they were adjusted how you wanted them, y'all dont actually Need to adjust them to do anything. Y'all simply demand to expect 20-30 seconds at the LEARNING state for the module to learn their position.

Again click [On/Off/Adjacent]. The output boxes will again change, just this fourth dimension for the better! They should now wait as such:

This now means yousve successfully gear up adjustment! YAY!

A quick check of your Xenon Range mistake codes (annotated surface area #1 in the chief Xenon Range screen shown in Step 4) will show your success:

Footstep seven: Congratulate Yourself
Now that everything is fixed, y'all have no more fault codes, and your headlights are neither illuminating your fog lights or blinding the old lady in the Buick Century that'due south headed to the salon, get yourself a hearty, tasty beer for your achievement.

Misc. Notes

  • This guide wouldnt exist possible without some of the info I gathered via DIYs I accept constitute. This link in particular helped the most: http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...tml&category=6
  • The link above also includes some info on how to alter your machines coding to forcefulness the leveling upwardly or down. I havent tested it, then do and then at your own risk!
  • As always, the entry at Nicks Machine Blog helped a ton, and in case you lotre dealing with anchor bug, information technology is a keen start before performing whatsoever of the above steps. http://nickscarblog.com/diy/how-to-f...ror-on-an-audi
